Zwickau’s Highlights

With nearly 100.000 inhabitants, Zwickau, Saxony’s fourth biggest city, offers many various cultural experiences. The city of Robert Schumann is known for its historical Old Town and for hundreds of affectionately restored Art Nouveau- and Wilhelminian style buildings. As you would expect from a small city, Zwickau offers the attractive combination of international and regional diversity in a small space. While wandering through the old streets and afterwards you can enjoy stress-free shopping and the comfort of rustic to luxurious restaurants and hotels. Since 2009 the city of Zwickau has officially been entitled "1a-Einkaufsstadt" (excellent shopping town) by Europe's largest business information service "markt intern” (internal market).

Not only is Zwickau the native city of Robert Schumann with the August Horch Museum having archived more than 100 years of automobile engineering tradition from Horch via Audi, DKW to Trabant and VW. But also Zwickau offers, as the capital of the Western Ore Mountains, architecture at its best. In 2004 one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau bath houses of Germany – the Johannisbad – celebrated its 100th anniversary. The concert hall and ballroom “Neue Welt” being one of Saxony’s most beautiful terrace halls in Art Nouveau style celebrated this anniversary one year before.

Another sight of Zwickau is located within the oldest masonry of the town, close to the Robert Schumann House! The museum “Priesterhäuser” (priest’s houses) at the cathedral court even belongs to the oldest residential buildings of Germany. The unique architectural example of medieval construction work is, in connection with its exhibition, more than just a historical piece of life and art.

Since 2008 Zwickau’s former town castle “castle Osterstein” (1292), has been reopened in new splendour after a long time.
